Alternators turn rotational movement from the fan belt into electricity that can be used to power the engine and other electrical appliances on the machine. Without a working alternator your battery would be flat pretty soon. The tension of the fan belt is vital for efficient operation. Over tightening causes damage to the bearings of the alternator and coolant pump, too loose and the belts will slip and not provide the right power.

An engine control unit (ECU) or engine control module (ECM) controls a series of actuators in the diesel engine to ensure optimal engine performance through electronic control. Modern diesel engines have a number of sensors within the engine and machine which provide readings to the ECU. The ECU adjusts the actuators to deliver the correct performance such as fuel / air mix, idle speed, pressures, wastegate control and other functions. Perkins defines the ECU programming for each engine to meet the application and engine demands. Contact your local Perkins distributor for assistance in ECU programming and application advice.
The glow plug is a heating device to enable better cold starting for diesel engines, or in some cases pre-heaters provide direct heating. They ensure the top of the cylinder and the air entering the cylinder is hot enough during the compression cycle for fuel ignition.
For a diesel engine to operate efficiently, especially with modern diesels, a range of sensors are used to monitor and control the engine function. From air and fuel flow to temperature, pressure and exhaust content, the sensor provides feedback so the engine can be adjusted for optimum performance.
Electromechanical solenoids are used within diesel engines to switch valves and other equipment, where a smaller electrical current is used to power a larger device. Such as in the starter motor or turbocharger waste gate.
Starters provide the force to turn the flywheel and start the diesel engine, and are designed with the size and format to match the engine and application. Being used frequently under heavy loads they need to be replaced due to solenoid failure, damaged or worn connectors, internal connector breakage, commutator brush wear and failure of the engage/disconnect drive mechanism.
Complete wiring looms and harnesses to connect the sensors and actuators to the electronic control module or ECM. Available as the complete loom for the engine, braided and wired, and supplied with connector plugs for a simple, easy replacement repair.
